Learning enrichment

Supporting every pupil to reach their full potential

Our learning enrichment department ensures that every pupil, regardless of their learning profile, can access the curriculum and thrive at Windlesham House. We celebrate differences and provide tailored support that builds confidence and independence.

How does Windlesham House support pupils with additional learning needs?

We recognize that children learn in different ways and at different paces. Some pupils benefit from additional support to help them access the curriculum fully, while others need extension and enrichment. Our learning enrichment department, led by Melissa Jordan, provides expert support tailored to individual needs.

Support might be needed for a range of reasons including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, attention difficulties, processing speed differences, or working memory challenges. We also support pupils who are exceptionally able and need differentiated provision to remain challenged and engaged.

What types of support are available?

Assessment and identification

When pupils join Windlesham House, we conduct baseline assessments to understand their learning strengths and areas for development. If teachers or parents have concerns about a pupil’s progress, we can conduct further diagnostic assessments. We work with external educational psychologists when specialist assessment is needed.

Individual support sessions

Pupils who would benefit from additional help receive regular one-to-one or small group sessions with our learning enrichment specialists. These sessions focus on specific areas such as:

  • Literacy skills including reading comprehension, spelling strategies, and writing structure
  • Numeracy skills including number sense, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving approaches
  • Study skills including note-taking, revision techniques, and time management
  • Organizational skills and executive function support
  • Touch-typing and assistive technology training
  • Exam access arrangements preparation

In-class support

Our learning enrichment assistants work alongside subject teachers in lessons, providing discreet support to pupils who need it. This ensures pupils remain fully integrated in their classes while receiving appropriate help to access learning.

Differentiation and reasonable adjustments

All teachers receive training in differentiating lessons and making reasonable adjustments for pupils with additional needs. This might include modified worksheets, additional processing time, use of assistive technology, or alternative ways of demonstrating understanding.

Individual Learning Plans

Pupils receiving learning enrichment support have individual learning plans that outline their strengths, areas for development, and strategies that help them learn effectively. These plans are shared with all staff and reviewed regularly with parents.

How do you support pupils who are exceptionally able?

Exceptionally able pupils also benefit from learning enrichment provision. We ensure these pupils are sufficiently challenged through curriculum extension, enrichment activities, and opportunities to explore subjects in greater depth. This might include:

  • Acceleration in specific subjects where appropriate
  • Participation in academic competitions and Olympiads
  • Independent research projects on topics of interest
  • Mentoring relationships with subject specialists
  • Preparation for senior school scholarship examinations

What is the philosophy behind learning enrichment?

We believe that additional learning needs should never be barriers to success. With the right support and strategies, all pupils can achieve their potential and develop confidence in themselves as learners. Our approach focuses on:

Building on strengths

We identify what pupils do well and use these strengths as foundations for development. Celebrating success builds confidence and motivation.

Developing independence

Our goal is to give pupils strategies they can use independently. We gradually reduce support as pupils become more confident and self-sufficient.

Whole-school approach

Learning enrichment is not just the responsibility of specialists. All staff understand and implement strategies that support diverse learners.

Partnership with parents

We work closely with families, sharing strategies and ensuring consistency between school and home support.

How are exam access arrangements managed?

For pupils who require exam access arrangements (such as additional time, use of a reader or scribe, rest breaks, or use of a word processor), we conduct appropriate assessments and apply to senior schools and exam boards on behalf of families. We ensure pupils are familiar with using any arrangements before sitting actual examinations.

Is there an additional charge for learning enrichment support?

Yes, individual and small group learning enrichment sessions incur an additional charge. The cost depends on the frequency and duration of sessions required. In-class support and whole-school differentiation are included in school fees. We discuss support needs and associated costs with parents before provision begins.

Will my child be withdrawn from lessons for learning enrichment?

We aim to minimize disruption to learning. Where possible, sessions are scheduled during non-core lesson times such as during games afternoons, co-curricular slots, or registration periods. If withdrawal from lessons is necessary, we rotate sessions to ensure minimal impact on any single subject and communicate clearly with parents about the rationale.

How do you communicate with parents about progress?

Parents of pupils receiving learning enrichment support receive regular updates via email or telephone. Individual Learning Plans are reviewed at least termly with parents invited to contribute. Progress is also reported in main school reports. We welcome ongoing dialogue and respond promptly to parent queries.
