Academic excellence

Scholarship preparation and extending the most able

Academic excellence at Windlesham House means every pupil achieving their personal best. For our most able pupils, we provide additional challenge, enrichment and preparation for senior school scholarships.

How do we achieve outstanding academic results?

Our almost 100% first-choice senior school placement rate and 45% scholarship success rate demonstrate the effectiveness of our academic programme. We achieve these results through a combination of excellent teaching, small class sizes, individual attention  and a culture that celebrates effort and achievement.

Academic excellence is not just about examination results. We develop pupils who are curious, confident, articulate and capable of independent thought. These qualities serve pupils throughout their education and beyond.

What is the scholars programme?

Our scholars programme identifies and supports pupils who demonstrate exceptional ability or potential in academic subjects. These pupils receive bespoke provision designed to stretch and challenge them while maintaining their love of learning.

Identification

Pupils are identified for the scholars programme through a combination of assessment data, teacher recommendation and work sampling. We look for pupils who demonstrate

  • Consistently high achievement across subjects or exceptional ability in specific areas
  • Intellectual curiosity and desire to explore topics in depth
  • Capacity to think abstractly and make complex connections
  • Independent learning skills and self-motivation
  • Potential to achieve scholarships at senior school

Provision

Scholar pupils receive enhanced provision which might include

Extension work
More challenging tasks within lessons that require higher-order thinking

Enrichment sessions
Additional sessions exploring subjects beyond the standard curriculum

Independent research projects
Opportunities to pursue intellectual interests with mentor support

How do you prepare pupils for senior school scholarships?

Scholarship preparation begins in Year 7 with identification of potential scholars and discussion with families about aspirations. Our programme includes

Year 7

Introduction to scholarship thinking through extended reading, essay writing and exploration of subjects beyond the curriculum. Pupils develop independent research skills and learn to construct sophisticated arguments. Mock scholarship examinations provide experience of the format and expectations.

Year 8

Intensive scholarship preparation for pupils sitting examinations in Year 8. This includes

  • Weekly scholarship sessions in academic subjects (English, mathematics, science, languages, history, geography)
  • Practice papers under timed conditions with detailed feedback
  • Interview preparation including mock interviews with external interviewers
  • General paper and critical thinking skills development
  • Portfolio preparation for art, music, or drama scholarships

What support is available beyond scholarships?

All pupils benefit from excellent preparation for senior school, not just those pursuing scholarships. Our approach includes

13+ preparation

The standard curriculum naturally prepares pupils for 13+ Common Entrance and scholarship examinations. Additional sessions ensure examination readiness.

Senior school guidance

We support families in choosing appropriate senior schools through:

  • Individual consultations about school options based on pupil strengths, interests and aspirations
  • Detailed knowledge of senior school requirements and cultures
  • Honest assessment of suitability and scholarship potential
  • Coordination of applications, assessments and examinations
  • Preparation of comprehensive references

Does every pupil need to attempt scholarships?

No, not at all. Scholarship examinations are significantly more demanding than standard entrance assessments. We guide families toward scholarship attempts only where we believe pupils have genuine potential for success. There is no pressure or expectation for all pupils to sit scholarship examinations.

What if my child does not win a scholarship?

The scholarship process itself is valuable, developing skills and resilience that serve pupils well. Most scholarship candidates still secure places at their chosen schools even if they do not win awards. The enhanced provision received through the scholars programme benefits pupils regardless of examination outcomes.

How do you balance academic pressure with wellbeing?

This balance is crucial. We monitor pupils carefully and maintain open dialogue with families. If we feel a pupil is experiencing unhealthy stress, we adjust provision accordingly. Our priority is always the long-term wellbeing and development of each child, not short-term examination performance at any cost.

Exploring potential
